North Texas - I'm sure you're probably wondering if this is another indie journalist group looking to make a name for themselves in giving the cold, hard facts of national and local news and basing their work on becoming beacons of truth from North Texas...
Nope. Not at all. That's too much work, if we're being honest.
I started ReMyx Media with the understanding that it's completely acceptable to talk about or create content on topics you're passionate about. I enjoy meeting new people, going to different events, and sharing my love for creative endeavors across the nation. I'm not a journalism major nor do I have any real-world "journalistic" experience, but my charismatic attitude would suggest otherwise. I'm an extroverted-introvert - I'm perfectly fine in big crowds and big spaces, but my people meter can dip and that is where I must retreat. Ironic considering what we do involves people...
So how did we get here?
Our Journey in the Content Creation Scene
I was introduced to podcasting in 2013. I started a podcast with two of my best online anime gal pals and then-boyfriend called AfterDark Radio (original ADR Promo). We talked about anything and everything under the sun that was anime related! We first gained attention in a Facebook group known as 3AL, which stands for African American Anime Lovers. Unfortunately, AfterDark Radio was already a name out in the podcast world and thus we decided to revamp. First we evolved into NexusGen Radio and, over time, reached our final evolution as The NexCrew! We immersed ourselves in content creation, vlogging, conducting interviews, and exploring audio dramas. We've always had an interest in K-pop, and we still do to some degree. We enjoyed exploring topics where Black identity intersects with geek culture. Our goal was to demonstrate that our race doesn't restrict our interests and to help others see the broader perspective. Black geeks are diverse, and we aimed to highlight our community, particularly here in Texas.
Under The NexCrew, my husband and I travelled to various conventions doing live podcast shows, interviewing a plethora of voice actors who worked in anime and gaming industries! We became a well-known small team of people doing some cool stuff between 2016 and 2019. I was especially proud because this was my chance to let my geeky wings soar and shine brightly. Being a kid from the hood, I didn't think I'd be able to do so. But to know that there were other Black women my age who were team Sailor Moon/Serena/Usagi defeating Goku made my inner child giggle with glee! Yes, I had found my people! We hosted local meetups, did volunteer work, and continued to support other creatives in their endeavors. I have met one of the coolest, and I do mean COOLEST, nerdy hip hop artist of our time in Mega Ran. Through him I was introduced to the Nerdy People of Color Collective - K-Murdoch, EyeQ, Creative Mind Frame, Ohm-I, and more.
Sadly, after the pandemic, the life of anime and gaming conventions went to a stand still. And I still wanted to create content so I started streaming on Twitch and conducting virtual interviews. I stopped streaming in 2022 and took time to really focus on my life, family, and my own personal health. My love for working press and media relations never died. If anything it fizzled out. So I decided to start fresh and thus ReMyx Media was born! My goals have changed and the methods have been adjusted. I don't what lies in store for Team ReMyx. What I do know is that this journey will look very different as time goes on. And I hope you, my dear reader, are up for a wild, fun, and sensational ride!
